Homelessness affects thousands of people nationwide, but the stereotypes surrounding those individuals is increasingly negative and based on misunderstanding. I want to address the issue by raising awareness and giving a voice to people who are otherwise unheard; right in the town of Marion, Indiana.
What Is Grant County Rescue Mission?
Brad, executive director and CEO of Grant County Rescue Mission, briefly explains what the shelter has to offer.
Dive Into Matt's Story
Matt, a United States Marine Corps veteran, was unable to work due to an on-job injury. He fell victim to various addictions and went through multiple shelter programs. When he joined the program at Grant County Rescue Mission, he realized that he needed to change his life. He is currently participating in an apprenticeship at GCRM and is housed there. Matt is striving to better himself every day and has a passion for helping others. He credits his success and growth to the Lord, and is dedicated to bring others to Him.
Thomas Discusses His Challenges
Thomas has faced many challenges throughout his life. He is not currently housed at Grant County Rescue Mission, and lives in an abandoned house in Marion, Indiana. He stops by the shelter at 5 pm ET for GCRM’s dinnertime, which is open to the public. I was able to speak with him about a few of the personal trials that he is facing. At the end of the audio clip, Brad, executive director and CEO of Grant County Rescue Mission, notices that Thomas is only wearing one glove. He then gifts Thomas a new pair of gloves and a hat so that he is better equipped for the winter weather.
Homelessness Is Not Always What It Looks Like
Brad uncovers one of his most impactful encounters, proving the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding homelessness to be incorrect. Homelessness has, more often than not, always been viewed by the general public in a negative light. The story that Brad shares is just one of many instances that go against the stereotypes.
